This could be an implementation of a common interface created for SFOS-934
That's an interesting point. We could have a common API. We could also add a deploy-by-copy variant that deployed up to it.
a common API is a second-pass kind of thing
Marking as done, though the virtual fs api does appeal to me. Later, perhaps.
